The History of Father's Day

Father's Day has a rich history stretching back over a century. The idea of a day dedicated to honoring fathers was first proposed by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, in 1910. Inspired by the existing Mother's Day celebrations, Dodd wanted to honor her own father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children on his own after his wife died in childbirth.

Dodd initially suggested June 5 — her father's birthday — but the celebration was moved to the third Sunday in June. The first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, with support from local churches, the YMCA, and the Spokane Ministerial Association.

Despite early enthusiasm, Father's Day took decades to gain national recognition. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday in 1924, and President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers in 1966. It wasn't until 1972, under President Richard Nixon, that Father's Day was officially signed into law as a permanent national holiday, observed on the third Sunday of June each year.

Today, Father's Day is celebrated in over 100 countries around the world, though the dates and traditions vary. In the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Japan, and many other nations, families come together to express gratitude for the fathers and father figures in their lives through gifts, cards, meals, and quality time.
